The Ventura County Board of Education will honor Amgen executives today for the company’s financial contributions to county schools.

Board President Yvonne Bodle, trustee Marty Bates and schools Supt. Chuck Weis will present an award at Amgen’s corporate headquarters.

“Amgen does so much for the education community in Thousand Oaks,” Bates said. “This is an opportunity to recognize a business that has been especially generous toward education.”

Amgen gives about $500,000 in cash and services to education each year, officials said.

The company sponsors an annual countywide Amgen Award for Teacher Excellence, which provides $10,000 each to five outstanding teachers. The company also donates $25,000 for arts education through New West Symphony and has provided $17,000 to support academic decathlon efforts and other programs at Ventura County high schools.

“Part of the motivation for giving to the community is in our interest as well,” said Jeff Richardson, director of public relations for Amgen. “Through these programs, we help the community, but we also help build our future staff.”
