10-Digit Dialing

* Re “Seven Is Enough,” Dec. 8: Overlooked in your editorial is that in metropolitan areas, such as Los Angeles, the boundaries between area codes are not well defined and lead to many incorrectly dialed calls. A case in point: Our home phone number in the 310 area has been issued to a taxi company in the adjacent new 323 area. In order to be able to sleep, we now must disconnect our phone every night and, as a result, are no longer accessible in the event of an emergency. Ten-digit dialing would give us our phone back.

Great! After more than a century of growing the telephone numbering system efficiently to meet constantly increasing demand, we now wrest control from the telephone companies and hand it over to the politicians and bureaucrats who have given us such shining examples as the public schools, public transportation, the post office and, recently, deregulation of electricity.
