Give UC Irvine’s schedule-maker an “A” for effort.

The Anteaters took 10 days off for final exams, then closed out their five-game, season-opening homestand Wednesday night with a 97-60 victory over winless UC San Diego at the Bren Center.

It was the most points scored by Irvine since a 99-70 victory over Nevada in the 1993-94 season and the victory gave the Anteaters (4-1) their best start in 18 years.

With Saturday’s game at UCLA in the back of their minds, every Anteater got into the act Wednesday.

Guard Malachi Moses led all scorers with 22 points and tied a career high with eight assists. Reserve center Stanislav Zuzak and reserve guard Alfred Miller scored 11 points. Green had 10 points and reserve guard Aras Baskauskas had a career-high eight assists.

Irvine grabbed the lead for good at 10-8 on a driving layup by guard Jerry Green only two minutes into the game. Later in the half, the Anteaters used a 12-5 run to build a 28-16 cushion.

San Diego (0-6) is in its first year of Division II play and has no scholarship players. The Tritons made only 17 shots, 13 from three-point range.
