Local Bird Count Scheduled Sunday

Share

Bird admirers can set their eyes skyward Sunday and join members of the Conejo Valley chapter of the Audubon Society as they take part in the annual National Christmas Bird Count.

About six teams of bird watchers will be positioned at sites throughout the county, including Naval Base Ventura County, the Santa Rosa Valley and Hidden Valley in Thousand Oaks to spot and identify various birds, said Walter Wehtje, a society member and event coordinator.

Some of the volunteers expect to spot and count sparrows, ducks and birds that live near the shore.

The group ranks among the top 25 nationwide with about 160 bird species spotted in the county each year.

The volunteer group will report its findings to the Audubon Society. The information will be published in a field identification book next year.

Similar countings will take place across the country and in Canada and South America during the next two weeks.

The Conejo Valley chapter has about 100 members.
