New Law Creates Chimp Sanctuaries
From Times Wire Reports
President Clinton signed into law legislation creating sanctuaries for hundreds of chimpanzees subjected to years of biomedical research. The new law will establish havens for retired chimpanzees who are either too old or too sick for continued use in research. Currently, many of the animals are warehoused in cramped laboratories. The White House said some research would be permitted in the sanctuaries, as long as the chimpanzees are not harmed. Animal rights groups welcomed the new law.
