From Associated Press

Martin Brodeur stopped 22 shots to earn his fourth shutout of the season Friday as the New Jersey Devils defeated the Florida Panthers, 2-0, at Sunrise, Fla.

Alexander Mogilny and Patrik Elias had first-period goals and Brodeur, who hasn’t lost to Florida in 15 starts (12-0-3), did the rest against an anemic Panthers offense.

The Panthers--with an NHL-low six victories--have one victory in 13 games (1-7-3-2) and have won only twice in 16 games at home this season.

Phoenix 5, Atlanta 1--Jeremy Roenick scored two third-period goals at Phoenix, surpassing 900 points in his 12-year NHL career.

The victory enabled the Coyotes to tie Dallas for second in the Pacific Division and denied the Thrashers (13-14-6-1) their first above-.500 record.

Edmonton 1, Calgary 1--Tommy Salo of the Oilers made 28 saves, including five in overtime, to lead Edmonton to a tie at Calgary, Alberta.

Rem Murray scored for Edmonton and Marc Savard for Calgary in the first period.

Around the League

Philadelphia Flyers left wing Kevin Stevens, who is being monitored under the NHL’s substance-abuse and behavioral-health program, practiced one day after a report said he was drinking last week in Colorado.

According to a report Thursday in the Bucks County Courier Times, Stevens told a Flyers official last week he “went drinking” in Colorado on Dec. 13 after a game.

Stevens was a healthy scratch for the third consecutive game but Flyers coach Bill Barber denied Stevens’ absence was related to drinking and said the situation was resolved.
