* LOYOLA MARYMOUNT (4-6) at UC SANTA BARBARA (2-7), 7, KXLU-FM (88.9)--With their 63-53 victory over Loyola Chicago, the Lions won back-to-back road games for the first time in five years. Greg Lakey got his first start in place of injured center Pablo Machado and scored 20 points. Lakey leads the Lions in scoring at 13.8 points per game. Defense has been the key to the Lions’ improvement. They held the Ramblers to 30% shooting and have kept opponents to 41% overall. Last season, opponents shot 46.7%. It has been a disastrous nonconference season for the Gauchos. After losing tough games to UCLA and USC, they’ve bottomed out in their last two against St. Mary’s and UC Riverside. Poor shooting has been their downfall. In their loss to Riverside Wednesday, they shot 19% in the first half and made just two of 19 three-point attempts. Only one player, forward Mark Vukovich, shoots better than 50%.
