The Saddleback Valley Unified School District is recruiting local grocery stores to offer incentives for poor-performing students. Albertsons and Ralphs supermarkets have agreed to work with Mission Viejo High School and Silverado Continuation School, respectively, to provide goodies for students who attend after-school tutoring sessions or make an effort to improve academically.
It hasn’t been decided what types of incentives might be offered, but baked goods top the list, said Barry Lietz, head of the high school intervention program.
Initially, the incentives will target ninth-grade students who fell below the 23rd percentile in standardized testing and take the Skills for Achieving Remediation (STAR) class for help.
