Abortion Issue

Re “McCain Is Put on Defensive Over Abortion,” Jan. 27: John McCain and George W. Bush like to portray themselves as straight-talking regular Joes, but both seem to evidence a bit of hypocrisy and elitism when the subject of abortion comes up. Both have gone on record as believing that if one of their daughters had an unwanted pregnancy, it would be a “personal, family” decision. At the same time, they advocate the federal government making the decision for everyone else’s daughters.

Makes me wonder what others among the laws they advocate would they feel didn’t apply to them.

Alex Arevalo wrote regarding Bush and his support of the death penalty while being pro-life, “Is there a difference between abortion and the death penalty?” (letter, Jan. 28). Yes, there is. People on death row had a choice about whether they would be there or not. They chose to commit a heinous crime. Those who are aborted had no such choice.
