“El Alma del Pueblo” at the Los Angeles Craft and Folk Art Museum is the first major exhibition of Spanish folk art in the United States. To celebrate its opening, the museum and the city’s Cultural Affairs Department are offering a free day of entertainment. Dia de la Familia includes mariachi and Flamenco music, Aztec dance, storytelling, and workshops on doll- and tile-making.

Toyota Symphonies for Youth, presented by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, takes the audience on a musical journey to Spain with conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya and host John De Lancie (Q on “Star Trek: The Next Generation”). The family event, a sampling of the music and dance of Spain geared to children 5 to 11, begins with an hour of pre-concert activities: storytelling, an art project, and a chance to meet musicians and try out musical instruments.

On the same night when La La La Human Steps finishes its weeklong Southland visit, Montreal Danse completes French Canada’s conquest of local audiences with a daring program at Cal State L.A. titled “Love, Death and Other Details.” The company was formed in 1986, and its choreographic “details” include Jose Navas’ “Enter: Last” and Paula de Vasconcelos’ “Love Letter to Tarantino.” Yes, she means that Tarantino--the creator of the films “Reservoir Dogs” and “Pulp Fiction.” So don’t expect dainty lyricism.

The Antaeus Company presents “The Liar,” Juan Ruiz de Alarcon’s 17th century Spanish romp about a young nobleman whose penchant for lying leads to a tangled web of misunderstanding and mistaken identity.

all day: Photo Exhibit

“Between Takes: Images from the Society of Motion Picture Still Photographers,” an exhibition of 120 photographs taken by some of the most esteemed still photographers working in film today, will be on display in the gallery of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences through April 9. The task of the still photographer working on a movie set is twofold: The photographer’s work should provide an artistic historical record of the film’s production and material to be used in the marketing and publicity campaign for the film. The photographs on display include scenes and behind-the-scenes candid shots from films such as “The Truman Show,” “The English Patient,” “Braveheart,” “Jaws,” “Ed Wood,” “Tootsie” and “Titanic.”

Outfest @ the Village, which normally hosts Wednesday-evening screenings of films and videos of gay and lesbian interest, is presenting a rare Saturday afternoon marathon screening of the controversial British television show “Queer as Folk.” The sexually provocative comedy-drama series from England’s venturesome Channel Four is a hit in France and several other European countries, and has gained cult status here in the States.
