The UCLA Hammer Museum offers a diverse sampling for art lovers as four exhibitions go on display this weekend: “Examining Pictures, Exhibiting Paintings,” a survey of 50 artists that draws connections between different generations of painters; “Power Up: Sister Corita and Donald Moffett, Interlocking,” an exhibition of the politically charged serigraphs of the former nun and the mixed-media works of Moffett; and the museum’s Contemporary Art Series featuring insrallations by San Francisco artists Barry McGee and Margaret Kilgallen.

McCabe’s Guitar Shop isn’t just for grown-up fans of folk, country, blues and bluegrass: An eclectic roster of Children’s Concerts is served up monthly too. This week, the Freeway Philharmonic puts on its kid-friendly jazz and pop show.

A zany one-act double bill: Chrissy Sonnek presents “Freakgirl,” her comic chronicle of an unusual childhood in the Dakotas that includes the deaths of seven dogs, interpretive dance at the Miss Snow Queen contest and cheerleading “for life.” In Edwin Keith Morrison’s comedy “Hope & ‘His Family,’ ” a man introduces his girlfriend to his outlandish family.

The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra is the Cadillac of big bands, led by three of the jazz world’s most respected performers. Bassist John Clayton, the orchestra’s director, is an internationally recognized composer-arranger. His brother, Jeff, is a soulful virtuoso of the saxophones and flute. Drummer Jeff Hamilton is renowned for his sense of swing. Together, they carry on in the tradition of Duke Ellington, Thad Jones and other historic big band leaders.

A new traveling exhibition offers a rare glimpse at life in China during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) as “Secret World of the Forbidden City: Splendors From China’s Imperial Palace” opens at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana. Billed as the largest exhibition of objects ever loaned by the Imperial Palace, many of the more 300 objects have been in storage for years and have never been displayed. Featured objects include arms and armor, robes and jewelry, paintings and ceramics, and a complete throne room, known as the Hall of Supreme Harmony.

Dueling chamber ensembles compete for our attention Sunday: At the Irvine Barclay Theatre in Irvine, the trio of violinist Maria Bachmann, pianist Jon Klibonoff and cellist Semyon Fridman returns, in a program of music by Haydn, Turina, Schoenfield and Mendelssohn. And, in Pasadena, as part of the Coleman Concerts series at Caltech, the touring Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center offers works by Poulenc, Ravel and Messiaen.
