SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A 62-year-old man was struck and fatally injured by a car as he tried to cross a Santa Ana street early Wednesday, police said.

Julian Arzate was carrying a lunch pail and may have been trying to catch a bus when he was hit about 5:45 a.m. at Bristol and Myrtle streets, Santa Ana police Sgt. Raul Luna said.

Arzate had made it halfway across the street and was standing in an 8-foot-wide painted lane divider on Bristol when a car made a right turn from Myrtle to go southbound on Bristol. Arzate apparently moved backward to avoid the vehicle and stepped into the path of a car traveling about 30 mph northbound on Bristol, investigators said.

The driver swerved but could not avoid hitting Arzate, who was thrown about 60 feet after rolling over the hood. The car then struck another car going north on Bristol.

Arzate was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he was dead on arrival, authorities said. Nobody else was injured.

The accident was caused by the pedestrian, police said, so the driver was not charged. Bristol Street was closed between 5th and Bishop streets for more than four hours after the crash, Luna said.
