As part of the city’s regular departmental review process, the Police Department will go under the magnifying glass next month. The department is given such scrutiny every seven years.

“It will help us to really formulate a plan,” said Chief Charles S. Brobeck. “We’re looking at the Police Department today and asking, ‘Are we really positioned for the 21st century?’ ”

About $100,000 has been set aside for the audit, said City Manager Allison Hart. The analysis will look at staffing, deployment and case loads to determine whether any reshuffling of bureaus is necessary, Brobeck said.

The department has 152 sworn officers, 106 civilian employees and about 65 volunteers. Those numbers will grow along with the city’s population, which is expected to double in the next 20 years, Brobeck said.
