BUENA PARK

About 35 students at Dysinger Elementary School are forming bonds--some quite strong--with seniors from the Buena Park Senior Center as part of a community service project by the class.

Once a month, the second- through sixth-graders take a 2-mile walk to the center. There, they spend an hour with their newfound buddies, sharing stories, making crafts or reading books together. Sometimes the students and their parents visit on their own or talk on the telephone.

“[It] has been a major emphasis for us this year,” said Linda Matlock, director of special services for the Centralia School District. “They’re learning about seniors and they’re learning to be kind.”
