Concordia Women Come on Strong in Second Half

Concordia stayed in the race for the Golden State Athletic Conference title with a 71-65 women’s basketball victory over host Biola Tuesday.

The Eagles (20-6, 9-4), who trail Vanguard and Fresno Pacific by one game, trailed by 13 points at the half, but outscored Biola, 42-23, in the second half.

Lara Hanson scored 15 points and Taryn Commins and Lindsay King had 14 each for Concordia.

In another GSAC women’s game:

Vanguard 69, Point Loma Nazarene 51--Forward Laura Lee and center Becki Huddle scored 20 points each for host Vanguard (21-5, 10-3). The Lions were without starting center Kelly Boeke.

In a nonconference game:

Chapman 68, Occidental 44--Shamekia Perkins had 18 points and Polly Neves had 14 for host Chapman (16-5). April Abeyta had 11 points and 11 rebounds.

In a GSAC men’s game:

Point Loma Nazarene 72, Vanguard 62--Four players scored in double figures for Vanguard, including Dennis Keane with 14 points, but the host Lions (11-14, 3-10) lost.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Chapman 91, Life Bible 61--Matt Poutsma made five three-pointers and finished with 19 points, leading host Chapman (17-5) to the win. Tim Werdel had 14 points and Nate Strange had 13 for the Panthers.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Point Loma Nazarene 5, Concordia 3--Brett Stehle drove in all five runs for host Point Loma Nazarene (6-1, 3-0).

Derek Patterson had a home run and two RBIs for Concordia (3-6, 0-3).

In nonconference baseball:

Chapman 11, Whittier 5--Brandon Maciel, Eric Albright and Mike Caira had three hits each for Chapman in its season opener. Caira’s two-run homer highlighted a four-run first for the Panthers.

In nonconference men’s volleyball:

Long Beach State 3, UC Irvine 0--Scott Faber had 19 kills and Jim Polster had 16 kills to lead Long Beach State (5-0) to a 15-9, 15-11, 15-6 win.
