Academic Challenge Will Put English, Spanish Skills to Test

Students from Polytechnic, Chatsworth, Canoga Park, Van Nuys and El Camino Real high schools will square off in English and Spanish today against rivals from other Los Angeles Unified School District teams, answering questions about everything from Shakespeare to astronomy.

Held in two rounds today and next Sunday, teams from 28 district schools will compete in the third annual Desafio Academico, which is Spanish for “Academic Challenge.”

Each team includes at least two students from English as a second language programs, and two other students who can speak Spanish. Questions on subjects related to Latin America are read in English, while questions on the rest of the world are read in Spanish. Students may answer in either language.

Scholarships totaling $35,000 will be awarded to winners.

Teams from North Hollywood, San Fernando, Kennedy and Monroe high schools will compete in next Sunday’s round. The competition will be held at a South Pasadena television studio and will be broadcast on KWHY-TV beginning at noon both days.
