A 23-year-old Westminster man was arrested Saturday on suspicion of attempted murder after he drove into a yard and onto a sidewalk trying to run over a friend, police said.

Investigators don’t know why Aaris Lam allegedly was trying to run over Tung Pham.

The two men had been together the night before, and Pham, 28, was walking home from Lam’s apartment, Sgt. Darrick Vincent said.

Lam allegedly hit Pham with his white 1998 Honda Accord. Pham then ran into a yard, with Lam and his Honda on his tail, police said.

Lam crashed into him, knocking him down, Vincent said.

Pham got up and ran down the sidewalk, with Lam chasing him in the Honda, Vincent said.

Police found Pham unconscious at the intersection of Iowa and 21st streets shortly after 8:45 a.m.

When he came to, Pham gave police the name of the suspect, and officers waited for him at his apartment two blocks away, Vincent said.

Lam was arrested when he arrived about noon and booked into Orange County Jail.

Pham was in fair condition at UCI Medical Center with a leg injury.
