Dons Win Twice in Tournament

Santa Ana needed a ninth-inning rally to win the first game against Fresno, then coasted to victory in the second game of a baseball doubleheader at the Best in the State tournament Saturday at Santa Ana College.

Jason Welch scored the winning run on Aaron Escobedo’s single to right to lift the Dons (6-0-1) to a 5-4 victory in the first game.

Santa Ana’s Tony Calderon had two hits and drove in four runs in a 12-4 victory in the second game, which was shortened to six innings because of darkness.

Santa Ana will play Sacramento at 10 a.m. today.

In the Diamond tournament:

Cypress 13, Palomar 2--Kevin Snapp had two hits, a run and an RBI, Sal Deanda had two hits and a run and Benny Francisco hit a three-run home run for the Chargers (7-0).

Golden West 18, Imperial Valley 13 (8, darkness)--Vinnie Chavez’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning broke a 13-13 tie for Golden West (5-2). Joe Yagher went three for five for the Rustlers, including a home run in the bottom of the fifth.

Saddleback 12, Imperial Valley 0--Kevin Beavers pitched 5 1/3 shutout innings, striking out six, and Saddleback (6-1) benefited from seven errors committed by Imperial Valley (3-5).

Jeff LaRue had three hits and two RBIs for the Gauchos.

Alesia and Jud Richards each hit two-run doubles and winning pitcher Ryan Cheo pitched seven innings, giving up four hits and no runs, in Saddleback’s 5-3 victory over Long Beach. Saddleback’s defense turned three double plays.

In the Southwestern Apache Classic:

Fullerton 7, El Camino 3--George Malone’s single in the eighth inning drove home Dave Cosato to break a 3-3 tie for Fullerton (4-2). Joe Rogers (1-0) pitched the final three innings to pick up the win.

East Los Angeles 7, Orange Coast 5--Eric Wiethorn’s three-run homer in the fourth inning gave Orange Coast a 4-2 lead, but the Pirates (2-3) couldn’t hold on. Wiethorn also doubled and scored two runs.
