For some high school students in Irvine, activism is already a way of life. The school district’s parcel tax initiative on the April 11 ballot has propelled students at University High School to form a Measure A Club, and students at other high schools are promoting the election with equal enthusiasm.
The tax, if passed, will earn $3 million for the Irvine Unified School District. Administrators and trustees hope it will help restore nearly $5 million in school programs and teachers’ salaries slated to be cut May 15.
“It’s our education that’s at stake,” said Dahm Choi, who co-founded the club with student Aaron Ezrog.
The first step for the student campaign was to try to encourage 18-year-old high schoolers to register to vote, Ezrog said.
