Council members will try yet again tonight to fire City Manager Arthur C. Simonian. An attempt to do so failed Feb. 1 when council members Mark Schwing and Henry Wedaa walked out of the closed session before the issue could be discussed. They said the city’s special attorney sent notice of the hearing to Simonian without the council’s permission.
Simonian was fired by the City Council in September for alleged financial malfeasance, but was reinstated by a judge who ruled that the City Council did not follow the proper procedure in terminating him. Simonian is now on paid administrative leave.
The city is suing Simonian to recover as much as $300,000 in bonuses that Simonian allegedly paid himself without the council’s authorization. Simonian has in turn sued the city.
