Jones Gets Ready With Winning Shot

Tuning up for his first game against the Lakers tonight, Eddie Jones bounced in a 19-foot jumper with 2.2 seconds left, giving the Charlotte Hornets a 95-93 victory over the 76ers on Tuesday at Philadelphia.

Jones had 27 points against Allen Iverson in a duel of the East’s starting all-star backcourt.

Iverson, who had 28 points, was closely guarded when he passed up a chance at the game-winner. He passed to Aaron McKie, who barely got off a 20-footer that was short at the buzzer.

Elden Campbell, the other former Laker, had 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Hornet forward Derrick Coleman (14 points) showed up in the second quarter after a court hearing in Charlotte, N.C., on a drunken driving charge.

Cleveland 92, San Antonio 81--Lamond Murray scored 27 points, rookie Andre Miller had 20 and the Cavaliers snapped a four-game losing streak by outhustling the defending NBA champions at Cleveland.

Tim Duncan scored 21 points for the Spurs.

Seattle 114, Washington 85--Gary Payton sat out the fourth quarter after scoring a career-high 41 points, including seven three-pointers, to lead the SuperSonics to an easy victory at Seattle.

The Wizards suffered their fourth straight loss and 12th consecutive road defeat.

Boston 101, Utah 99--Kenny Anderson scored 19 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter as the Celtics beat the Jazz at Salt Lake City for the first time since January 1988.

Anderson made four free throws in the final 16.4 seconds as Boston ended a 14-game losing streak against the Jazz. Karl Malone led Utah with 32 points.

Toronto 91, New York 70--Vince Carter scored 29 points and Tracy McGrady had 18, including 10 straight in one span of a 14-point third quarter, as the Raptors won their seventh straight home game. The Knicks scored eight points in the third quarter.

Milwaukee 112, Dallas 99--Dennis Rodman had 16 rebounds before being ejected for arguing a call with 7:13 left in the Mavericks’ loss to the Bucks at Dallas. Rodman at one point sat on the court.

Glenn Robinson led the Bucks with 29 points.

Phoenix 117, Sacramento 108--Rodney Rogers came off the bench to score a career-high 36 points as the Suns won at Sacramento.

Houston 107, Detroit 102--Shandon Anderson scored 25 points, including eight in a key 10-5 surge in the fourth period, to lead the Rockets past the Pistons at Houston.

Denver 107, Minnesota 104--Nick Van Exel scored 25 points, including a crucial three-pointer with 34.2 seconds left in overtime at Minneapolis, and the Nuggets snapped a 10-game road skid.

Portland 92, Golden State 83--Arvydas Sabonis had 21 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Trail Blazers to victory at Oakland.

In losing their fourth consecutive game, the Warriors made only 16 of 28 free throws.

Atlanta 103, New Jersey 86--Dikembe Mutombo had 21 points, 13 rebounds and 11 blocked shots for his third career triple-double in the Hawks’ victory at Atlanta.

Stephon Marbury had 27 points for the Nets, who lost for the eighth time in 10 games.
