An armed man who allegedly held a woman by the neck in a domestic violence dispute was shot by a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy and was in critical condition late Saturday night, a department spokesman said.

The shooting happened early Saturday morning in the 600 block of Sydney Drive in East Los Angeles. Deputy Bob Killings said the man had a handgun in his waistband and was holding the woman by the neck when deputies arrived.

He said the man moved up a staircase of a two-story apartment building, pulled the gun and pointed it at the deputies. One deputy fired and hit the man in the upper body. The handgun was recovered at the scene.

Killings declined to identify the deputy and said he did not know the injured man’s identity or whether he was booked on any charges. Homicide and internal affairs investigators will examine the shooting.
