Hillary Rodham Clinton took a breather from the hurly-burly of New York politics to dine on grilled rack of lamb and California pinot noir with the king and queen of Spain at a sparkling White House state dinner Wednesday.

The lavish affair for 170 guests, featuring a performance by tenor Placido Domingo, topped off the first lady’s first official day back in the executive mansion since launching her political campaign in New York on Feb. 6.

“Mrs. Clinton has always taken an active role in the planning for state dinners, and despite her busy schedule in New York she was able to be involved in all aspects of the usual preparations for the Spain dinner,” said spokeswoman Toby Graff.
