COSTA MESA

A park may change hands but should remain open space, the school board agreed at a study session Tuesday night.

The recommendation came from Newport-Mesa Unified School District Supt. Robert Barbot and is what residents surrounding the park and its tenant, the city of Costa Mesa, have been seeking from the district for weeks.

Balearic Park is a 9.25-acre lot owned by the school district that serves as a neighborhood park with soccer fields and a new playground. For more than 22 years, Costa Mesa’s Recreation Department has run a community and day-care center there.

Residents became alarmed last month when a citizens committee recommended the school board sell the park to help pay for school maintenance if a proposed $110-million bond issue passes to fund repairs.
