‘Bread of Life’ Dinner in Oxnard

* All Saints Episcopal Church of Oxnard will have a week of activities beginning with a “Bread of Life” dinner in the parish hall at 5:30 p.m. today.

On Sunday, there will be worship services at 8 and 11 a.m. A Spanish worship service will be held at 9:30 a.m.

Classes on Sunday will include a 9:30 a.m. adult lectionary Bible study led by the Rev. Warren V. Porter and a 10:30 a.m. Christian education for children led by Sunday School Supt. Cindy Morales.

A Christian Spirituality meeting will be held in the parish hall at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.

There will be a Holy Eucharist service in Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

On Thursday, a Bible study class will be held at 1:30 p.m., and choir rehearsal will be in Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Simi Church to Emphasize Mission

* Trinity Lutheran Church of Simi Valley will hold a Mission and Ministry Weekend today and Sunday.

Exhibits will represent the different missions and ministries at Trinity. Each ministry will have an activity to reach out to those the church.

Exhibits will be open before the 5 p.m. service today and the 9 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday services.

Casino Night to Benefit School

* The public is invited to Mardi Gras Casino Night 2000 at St. Paschal Baylon’s School at 7 p.m. today.

The $30 admission to the fund-raising event will cover $3,000 in fun-bucks, appetizers, desserts and nonalcoholic beverages. A no-host bar will be available. Attendees can participate in a variety of games, such as blackjack, craps and poker.

Proceeds will benefit the school. Tickets will be on sale after all Masses at St. Paschal’s today and Sunday and at the door.

Churches Council to Host Dinner

* The Ventura County Council of Churches will host a dinner at 6:30 p.m. today at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Oxnard.

Tickets for the dinner meeting cost $10 per person.

The council will sponsor an “Ecumenical Dialogue on Faith and Science” at 1:30 p.m. March 15 in the Salon Room at St. John’s Seminary Theology Library in Camarillo.

Minister to Speak on ‘Pioneers’

* Unitarian Universalist Church of Ventura will honor Black History Month as the Rev. Dick Weston-Jones of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ventura speaks on “African-American UU Pioneers” at the 9:15 and 11 a.m. services Sunday.

Sermon on ‘Bless It and Prosper’

* Unity Center Church of Thousand Oaks will hold services at 10 a.m. Sunday. The Rev. Irma Oestmann will speak on “Bless It and Prosper.” Freddie Weber will be the featured soloist, and Richard Jones will be at the piano. Children are invited to attend Children’s Church in the upper room.

‘Faith Talk’ Series Continues

* United Methodist Church in Simi Valley will hold services at 8 and 10 a.m. Sunday. The Rev. Brandon Cho continues his series on “Faith Talk” with “Food for Thought,” using John 6:1-15.

The Chancel Ringers Quartet will play at both services. Child care is provided for infants and preschoolers. Sunday School for all ages begins at 9 a.m., and a Spanish service is at 1:30 p.m.

Blood pressure screenings will be available after the 8 and 10 a.m. services and the 1:30 p.m. service.

The Discovery Club for pre-kindergarten through grade six and youth fellowship for junior and senior high school students meet at 6 p.m.

Pastor to Discuss ‘Letters’

* First Presbyterian Church of Oxnard will hold a worship service at 10 a.m. Sunday. Pastor James K. Bain Jr. will deliver the sermon “Letters From God,” based on 2 Corinthians 3:1-6.

There will be Sunday School for youths during the worship service. Adult Sunday School will be at 9 a.m.

To prepare for Lent, the church will have its annual Shrove Tuesday pancake supper at 5:30 p.m. March 7. Tickets are $3.50 per person.

CLU to Host Forum on Prop. 22

* A public forum on Proposition 22, “The Limit on Marriage Initiative,” will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday in Samuelson Chapel at Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks.

The forum will be hosted by Cal Lutheran’s department of religion, the United Church of Christ of Simi Valley and the Conejo Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.

Oxnard Minister to Speak

* St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Oxnard will hear from the Rev. Alan P. Gorsline on “Patching the Overalls” during the service at 10:15 a.m. Sunday. Children will meet in the sanctuary for the beginning of the worship celebration before being dismissed to their classrooms. The Japanese Ministry will meet at 2 p.m.

Art Exhibit on Display at CLU

* A mixed-media art exhibit titled “The Book of Revelation: Apocalypse” by A. Nancy Snooks will be on display through Sunday at Cal Lutheran University’s Kwan Fong Gallery of Art and Culture in Thousand Oaks.

Snooks, a printmaker and professor emeritus who has received international recognition for her art, works out of her studio in Ventura and lectures at the Carnegie Museum in Oxnard. She has been working on the Book of Revelation series for 30 years using a process that incorporates collage, drawings and photocopying.

Course to Cover Jewish Mysticism

* The Conejo Jewish Academy in Agoura is offering a crash course on the basics of Jewish mysticism on three consecutive Mondays beginning at 8 p.m. Monday.

“Going Kabbalistic” will include discussion on topics that include “What is Kabbalah and why was it kept secret all these years?” “What is a soul?” “Do we believe in angels?” “Is there more than one world?” and “Why are Chassidim always happy?”

Rabbi Yiroel Levine will be the instructor. He has been teaching Kabbalah at the academy for five years.

There is an $18 fee per registrant. The academy is at 30345 Canwood St.

Interfaith Panel Discussion

* The Ventura Interfaith Ministerial Assn. and Oxnard Ministerial Assn. invite the public to an interfaith panel discussion on “What My Faith Means to Me” at 7 p.m. Monday in the sanctuary of the First Christian Church in Ventura.

John Sherwood, president of the Ventura Interfaith Ministerial Assn., will be the moderator. The panel will include the Rev. Amy Aitken, First United Methodist Church; practitioner Chuck Filbert, Christian Science Church; Rabbi Lisa Hochberg-Miller, Temple Beth Torah in Ventura, and the Rev. Stephen Klaas, Ventura Friends Church.

There is no charge for the program, which has been organized so the speakers can share what their faith means to them and give information on their beliefs concerning the nature of God, prayer, meditation, marriage, life after death, love, morality, angels, demons, healing and other interests. Five-minute presentations by each speaker will be followed by 1 1/2 hours of questions and answers.

Jewish Stand on Issues Examined

* The Conejo Jewish Academy of Agoura Hills will present a four-part series offering the Jewish response to some of today’s moral and ethical issues beginning with “Jewish Social Ethics--The Foundation of a Healthy Society” at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Future topics include business relationships, cloning and moral challenges facing the legal profession.

Israeli Dance Class for Adults

* Israeli dancing for adults comes to Temple Etz Chaim in Thousand Oaks in cooperation with Temple Adat Elohim in Thousand Oaks and Temple Beth Torah in Ventura.
