Cincinnati Pounds UNLV

Third-ranked Cincinnati reached triple figures in scoring Sunday for the first time this season. And it has its defense to thank for it.

Kenyon Martin scored 21 points and led a swarming and gloating defense that blocked a dozen shots as the Bearcats rolled over Nevada Las Vegas, 106-66, at Cincinnati.

DerMarr Johnson had 22 points and Pete Mickeal added 16 for Cincinnati (12-1).

The Bearcats also struck a little fear into UNLV (8-3), which matched a season high with 23 turnovers and was shoved around inside. Cincinnati dominated the boards, 51-33, and had seven steals and 12 blocks.

“Our guys tried to go up strong and just got manhandled, pushed around,” Rebel Coach Bill Bayno said.

Cincinnati took control in the opening minutes by slicing through UNLV’s man-to-man defense for easy baskets. Martin scored the game’s first seven points as Cincinnati opened with an 11-0 run and never trailed.

No. 4 Auburn 100, Stony Brook 45--Chris Porter scored 15 points to lead the Tigers past the Sea Wolves, who are in their first season of Division I play. It was the 23rd consecutive home victory for Auburn (12-1), which took a 14-0 lead over Stony Brook (2-13) and never trailed.

No. 9 Duke 96, William & Mary 55--Carlos Boozer scored a career-high 28 points, and Chris Carrawell added 20 as the Blue Devils got their 600th victory in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils (9-2) have defeated the Tribe (5-5) 15 consecutive times, and by at least 23 points in each of the last eight meetings.

No. 13 North Carolina 86, Howard 53--Brendan Haywood had a season-high 21 points and 10 rebounds as the Tar Heels defeated the Bison (0-9) at Chapel Hill, N.C. North Carolina (9-4) led, 70-35, before pulling its starters with eight minutes to play.

No. 14 Maryland 100, Coastal Carolina 48--The Terrapins (11-2) scored the game’s first 16 points en route to a 44-20 halftime lead, then scored the first 11 points of the second half and cruised to their 72nd consecutive nonconference home victory. The Chanticleers (2-9) shot 28% in the first half.

No. 16 Tennessee 72, Radford 46--Marcus Haislip and Jon Higgins scored 11 points apiece to lead the Volunteers (12-1) past the Highlanders (4-6) at Knoxville, Tenn. Tennessee had 10 players score points.

No. 18 Texas 90, Houston 80--Center Chris Mihm had 20 points, 13 rebounds and tied his school record with seven blocks as the Longhorns (8-3) pulled away from the Cougars (6-7) at Austin.

New Mexico 78, Washington 52--Kevin Henry scored 17 points and made five three-point shots to lead the Lobos’ victory at Albuquerque, N.M. New Mexico (8-7) broke a 13-13 tie with Washington (5-7) with an 8-5 run en route to a 38-28 halftime lead.

WOMEN

Svetlana Abrosimova scored 25 points and had four steals as No. 1 Connecticut routed No. 3 Louisiana Tech, 90-63, at Storrs, Conn. Connecticut (10-0) took an 18-4 lead after six minutes, and Louisiana Tech (10-2), which made only 13 of 42 first-half shots, never recovered. Connecticut (10-0) connected on six of nine three-point shots in the first 20 minutes. Betty Lennox led Louisiana Tech with 27 points. . . . Susan Blauser had 24 points and 12 rebounds as No. 17 Illinois (11-4) pulled off an 82-65 upset of No. 5 Georgia (14-2) at Champaign, Ill. . . . No. 6 Texas Tech (10-1, 0-1 Big 12) suffered its first loss, 62-37, to No. 14 Iowa State (9-2, 1-0) at Ames, Iowa. . . .
