Because it didn’t receive a written response in time from the Marine Corps, the City Council delayed until a later meeting a discussion of the Marines’ proposed helicopter training facility near the city.
City officials had drafted a letter at the Dec. 15 council meeting requesting, among other things, that the Marines limit operations at their Helicopter Outlying Landing Facility to the 430 daily takeoffs and landings outlined in a military environmental assessment of the site.
The Marine Corps plans two parallel, 4,000-foot-long airstrips about 3 1/2 miles from the city limits. The area is being graded for construction.
In its letter, the city asked for a number of written assurances on how the Marines will operate the field, including a promise to perform an additional environmental assessment of the site if new aircraft are used there.
