POP/ROCK

Top Rock Tracks: The Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” topped a list of the 100 greatest rock songs ever in a VH1 poll of 700 music industry leaders. The rest of the Top 10, in descending order: Aretha Franklin’s “Respect,” Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven,” Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone,” Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” the Eagles’ “Hotel California,” the Doors’ “Light My Fire,” the Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations,” the Beatles’ “Hey Jude” and John Lennon’s “Imagine.” The Beatles were the most represented artists on the list, with nine songs, followed by five Stones cuts, four each by Elvis Presley and Zeppelin, and three by Dylan. Several top artists, including Fleetwood Mac, U2, R.E.M., Neil Young and Madonna, were shut out of the Top 100, a factor that VH1’s programming director said resulted from votes being split among several of the artists’ songs. Nirvana’s 1991 anthem “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was the only 1990s track to make the cut. Among the musicians voting on VH1’s panel were U2’s Bono, Johnny Cash, Art Garfunkel, Bonnie Raitt, Lou Reed and the late Curtis Mayfield. The cable network will count down the list in a five-night series beginning Jan. 17.

Making It Official: After months of rumors, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones are officially engaged. “While no date has been set, they plan to wed later this year,” Douglas’ publicist said, noting that Douglas, 55, proposed to the 30-year-old Welsh actress on New Year’s Eve at his home in Aspen, Colo. Zeta-Jones’ publicist, meanwhile, said the proposal came with a “big ol’ diamond ring,” and said the actress is “ecstatic, thrilled and very, very happy.” British tabloids had reported the relationship was on the rocks just last month when Zeta-Jones arrived alone in Wales shortly before Christmas. But Douglas arrived to join her for the holiday. The couple met at a film festival in 1998 and have been dating since last March. They share a Sept. 25 birthday. Douglas separated from his wife of 22 years, Diandra, in 1997.

Super Bowl Stunts: ABC will air an all-football-questions edition of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” on Jan. 29, the day before it televises TV’s most watched event, the Super Bowl. Meanwhile, hoping to make an even bigger hit out of its Emmy winner “The Practice,” ABC has scheduled a special edition of the drama immediately after the big game. The networks have often used the prime slot to introduce new series. . . . Meanwhile, cable’s USA Network will again counter the game’s half-time festivities by airing a live wrestling event, “WWF Halftime Heat.” Last year’s similar stunt drew a then-record audience for basic cable.

QUICK TAKES

New Oscar producers Richard and Lili Fini Zanuck, who have opted to do away with the telecast’s dance numbers this year, are also bringing in some new blood in the show’s music department. Acting as musical directors this year will be Burt Bacharach, a three-time Oscar winner himself, and celebrated music producer Don Was. . . . Both “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” and “Late Show With David Letterman” posted viewing increases in fourth-quarter 1999 compared to the previous year, based on Nielsen Media Research data. Leno averaged about 6 million viewers nightly versus roughly 4 million for Letterman, reflecting gains of 2% and 12%, respectively. . . . Grammy-winning rapper Stanley Howse of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony was charged Wednesday with three felony weapons violations, making a terrorist threat and resisting an officer, after an incident Monday in which his relatives called Los Angeles police after an argument at their home. Investigators said Howse had a loaded shotgun and initially refused to leave the house after police arrived. Howse is on probation after pleading guilty in 1998 to assault with a deadly weapon for attacking a neighbor.
