41st Assembly Field Calls for Pre-Primary Debates

In the crowded race for the 41st Assembly District, several candidates called Thursday for debates to be held before the March 7 primary.

Republican Jayne Murphy Shapiro wrote a letter Thursday to Democrat S. David Freeman, general manager of the city Department of Water and Power, challenging Freeman to two debates, including one on ethics issues.

“This is the best way I know of to encourage civic involvement in this year’s elections,” wrote Shapiro, an Encino resident who heads a child safety group.

Freeman’s campaign staff members did not return calls for comment Thursday.

Former Agoura Hills Mayor Fran Pavley and Santa Monica psychologist William Wallace--both Democratic candidates in the race--also called Thursday for all candidates to participate in debates.

“I’m not going to be able to mount a full mail campaign, so a debate might let me get my side heard,” Wallace said.

Pavley said at least one debate should be held in the San Fernando Valley portion of the district.
