Traffic Officers to Patrol Near School

A new City Council measure calls for traffic officers at a hazardous intersection near Arminta Street Elementary School.

The measure unanimously approved Friday calls for officers at the intersection of Strathern Street and Beck Avenue to help safeguard students.

In addition, a study by the Department of Transportation will determine the need for additional traffic safety measures.

“There’s a lot of fast traffic [on Strathern],” said Sandy Carruthers, a school administrative assistant.

“Sometimes the cars don’t even stop for the crossing guards.”

The purpose of the traffic officers, who will be assigned by the Los Angeles Police Department, is to assist the crossing guard who works at the Strathern-Beck intersection.

The safety study will consider further measures, such as creating new signs, installing “smart crosswalks” or reducing the speed limit.

Councilman Alex Padilla drafted the motion after he received a petition last month signed by more than 100 parents.
