School Bonds

Re “Ads Start for Plan to Ease School Bond Approval,” Jan. 5: As a recent transplant from Pennsylvania, I am amazed at the damage done to California public schools by Proposition 13 and its aftermath. California’s position near the bottom of the list of states with regard to public school funding should be a source of embarrassment and deep shame to the governor, the Legislature and all residents of this rich state.

Yet here we have the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Assn. and other opponents of Proposition 26 arguing against the simple democratic principle that the opinion of the majority should guide local policy on school bonds. It is truly a wonder that some people can sleep at night.
