Noose Incident Leads to Verdict Against Employer

A construction company has not yet decided whether it will appeal a jury decision awarding $490,000 to a black worker who spotted a hangman’s noose on a crane at a San Francisco International Airport job site.

The jury earlier this week awarded the money to Willie Greene, 55, of Petaluma for emotional distress.

However, the panel did not find that Dillingham Construction fired Greene in retaliation for his response to the incident, as he claimed.

The case involved a “single isolated incident” caused by a worker sent to the airport by “the union hall,” the company said in a statement.

Monday’s verdict by an Alameda County jury entitles Greene to about $1 million in attorney’s fees.
