Fiesta to Celebrate Treaty of Cahuenga
A fiesta and historical reenactment Sunday will mark the 153rd anniversary of the signing of the Campo de Cahuenga Treaty, which ended the Mexican-American War in California and paved the way for the state’s entry into the Union.
History buffs will portray Lt. Col. John C. Fremont, commander of the California Volunteer Battalions, and Gen. Andres Pico, commander of the Mexican forces, who met near what is now Universal City on Jan. 13, 1847, to sign the document, also known as the Capitulation of Cahuenga.
An array of performers, including fiesta, Indian and period dancers will be featured.
A replica of an 1840s Mountain Howitzer, minus the cannonball, will be fired off as part of the celebration.
The free event will begin at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Campo de Cahuenga, 3919 Lankershim Blvd. Parking will be available across the street at 10 Universal City Plaza.
