Attorney’s Election to Panel on Redevelopment Questioned

The Los Angeles city clerk recommended Friday that the City Council nullify the election of North Hollywood attorney Glenn Hoiby to a citizen advisory panel overseeing a proposed redevelopment project area in the northeast San Fernando Valley.
City Clerk Mike Carey recommended that the council uphold the protests of some community organizations, who complained that Hoiby, a critic of the Community Redevelopment Agency, intimidated other candidates.
David Gershwin, an aide to Councilman Alex Padilla, said at least one candidate dropped out after Hoiby sent letters to activists for nonprofit groups warning that their involvement might violate laws prohibiting political activity by tax-exempt organizations.
Hoiby could not be reached for comment late Friday. In a letter to the council, Carey recommended that four additional protests involving other candidates be dismissed.
