Grant Gets Haunt From Taunt, Still Beats Canoga Park

Share

Dante Witherspoon scored 12 of his game-high 29 points in the fourth quarter, but his three-point shot as time expired bounced off the rim and Canoga Park lost to Grant, 68-65, in a Sunset Six League game Friday night at Canoga Park.

The Hunters (8-8, 1-1 in league play) pulled within 66-65 with eight seconds remaining after converting a taunting foul against Grant into a five points. Brandon Edison made a layup but was assessed a technical after pumping his fist in the direction of the Canoga Park bench. Witherspoon sank both free throws with 15 seconds remaining, then made a three-pointer with eight seconds left off the ensuing possession.

Grant guard Ryan Logan was intentionally fouled and made both free throws with five seconds remaining.

Socrates Carrell led the Lancers (14-3, 2-0) with 17 points. Edison scored 12, Bryan Guevara had 11 points and seven assists, and Krishna Evans added nine points and 12 rebounds.

Jonathan Townsend had 15 points for Canoga Park and Cecil Brown had 12 points, six assists and six steals before fouling out with 1:03 remaining. Jammie Harris scored nine of his 10 points in the fourth quarter and had 11 rebounds for the Hunters, who were outrebounded, 46-37.

Canoga Park used a stifling full-court press to hold the Lancers scoreless in first four minutes and forced eight of Grant’s 18 turnovers in the first quarter.

DeWayne Anderson of Grant was held out for the second consecutive game. Grant may have to forfeit 12 victories Anderson played in if he is ruled ineligible for violating City Section residency rules. Anderson played in Tennessee last season but moved back to the area to live with a friend, and City Section rules require returning athletes to live with the legal guardian they were living with at the time of their departure.

Grant will seek a waiver from the City Section rules committee Tuesday.
