10,000 to Go in San Diego Marathon

Jonathan Hume of Lakewood, Colo., leads a field of 10,000 runners and walkers who will compete in today’s San Diego marathon.

The 26.2-mile race will be joined by four others, including a half-marathon and wheelchair race. All races start and finish at Plaza Camino Real in Carlsbad, with the marathon starting at 6:30 a.m.

Hume was the men’s champion last year with a winning time of 2:20:23, 21 seconds faster than second-place finisher Wynston Alberts.

A $3,000 prize will be given to the male and female winners.

The San Diego race is the second-oldest marathon in the West. In previous years it was scheduled for New Year’s Day, but it was rescheduled because of conflicts with San Diego’s New Year’s Eve celebration.
