Spending Priorities
In response to Jan. 6 articles about Gov. Gray Davis issuing a “call to arms” and the gap we have with other states on cost per pupil, I turned to another article, “Third Official to Leave State Youth Authority,” in which you gave the cost of $427 million to house 7,600 wards. I did some simple division. Something is wrong with our priorities.
We spend $5,600 on education for one student per year but we spend $56,184 to house one juvenile criminal per year.
