Maybe someone forgot to tell Boston that Monday’s game was a matinee, because the Bruins took a long time to wake up on the ice. And when they did start playing better, captain Ray Bourque wasn’t around to see it.

“We played 10 minutes,” Coach Pat Burns grumbled after his Bruins rallied from a three-goal deficit with seven minutes to play to tie the Atlanta Thrashers, 3-3, at Boston. “The fans pay to watch for 60 minutes, not 10.”

Kyle McLaren and Joe Thornton scored 13 seconds apart near the seven-minute mark in the third period, then Dave Andreychuk scored with 30 seconds left in regulation to tie the score.

Bourque, a five-time Norris Trophy-winner scheduled to make his 18th consecutive All-Star appearance, left with 3:26 remaining in the first period after a deflected slap shot knocked out three teeth and split his upper lip. The Bruins could not immediately say how long he will be out.

Chicago 5, San Jose 4--Doug Gilmour scored on a two-on-one only 56 seconds into overtime to give the Blackhawks a victory over the Sharks at Chicago.

New Jersey 5, Carolina 2--Rookie John Madden broke a second-period tie with his NHL-best fourth short-handed goal as the Devils defeated the Hurricanes at East Rutherford, N.J. The Devils lead second-place Philadelphia by seven points in the Atlantic Division.

Florida 3, Philadelphia 1--Robert Svehla scored a pair of third-period goals as the Panthers defeated the Flyers at Sunrise, Fla., to stretch their winning streak to five. Florida has won seven of eight, while Philadelphia has lost three in a row, scoring only two goals in those three games.

Ottawa 4, New York Islanders 3--Marian Hossa scored with 1:03 left in overtime to complete a comeback victory at Uniondale, N.Y.

Trailing 3-1 with only 7:25 remaining, the Senators got a two-man advantage and scored twice in two minutes to tie the game.
