Mobil Ratings Giveth and Taketh Away Stars
West Virginia’s venerable Greenbrier resort was demoted from five stars to four by the Mobil Travel Guide for the first time in 38 years. Mobil lowered its rating of the luxury resort in White Sulphur Springs in listing its awards for the year 2000, but didn’t say why.
Greenbrier President Ted Kleisner said he will investigate how the 7,000-acre resort, a top destination for golfers, fell short. “Mobil found something wrong, and we’re going to correct it,” Kleisner told the Washington Post. “We’re determined to get that star back.” Mobil inspects properties anonymously.
Only 42 hotels and restaurants received five stars from Mobil this year; 425 rated four stars. Last year 44 establishments achieved a five-star rating. Two California hotels, L’Ermitage in Beverly Hills and the Mandarin Oriental in San Francisco, were elevated to five-star status by Mobil this year.
