During an often heated debate last week, Councilwoman Susan Winthrow and Mayor Sherri Butterfield tangled with council critic Larry Gilbert and Brad Morton, of the Committee for Integrity in Government, over the proposed construction of a City Hall. Gilbert and Morton insisted throughout the debate that Winthrow and Butterfield were trying to mislead city residents to get voter approval for a 47,000-square-foot City Hall behind the library.
Winthrow and Butterfield, in turn, maintained that building a City Hall is the best option for the city and that those who oppose it were doing so solely for political reasons.
Much of the argument focused on the issue of space, how much the city needs for its employees and what is the most cost-effective way to create that space.
