Homes Lose Power After Crane Mishap

Share

About 1,200 Valley homes and businesses lost power Friday evening when a construction worker operating a crane near Van Nuys Airport knocked down electrical wires, authorities said.

“Somehow the crane got entangled in some high-voltage lines there and knocked a couple of wires to the ground,” said Jim Wells, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department. No one was hurt in the incident, which occurred shortly before 6 p.m. in the 16800 block of Roscoe Boulevard.

The power outage affected a 10-block area, said Marie Lemelle, spokeswoman for the Department of Water and Power. Electricity was restored to all but 40 customers within an hour. After the worker was freed from the crane, power was restored to the remaining homes about 7:30 p.m., Lemelle said.
