The city’s Traffic Commission voted last week to recommend two permanent street closures in the Wabash Avenue area to discourage motorists from cutting through the residential neighborhood. About 80 people packed the commission meeting Thursday, and an equal number of residents spoke for and against the closures that the city proposes to erect at Wabash and Prospect avenues and on 6th Street between Wabash and Chestnut avenues. The recommendation was based on a recent study of temporary barriers at those spots, showing the closures will considerably reduce pass-through traffic near the homes, said Traffic Engineer Bernie Dennis. He said the roadblocks will cause a minor inconvenience for some people. “But we have found that this plan will benefit the most number of people in that area,” he added.
