TRACK AND FIELD
Long Beach State’s Tayyiba Haneef, a graduate of Laguna Hills High, will join five of the country’s other top women high jumpers at a pre-Olympic trials competition at noon today at Long Beach State.
Haneef was the Big West Conference outdoor champion last spring, finished sixth at the NCAA indoor championships and seventh at the outdoor championships.
FOOTBALL
Mike Taylor, head coach at Orange Coast College, will be one of seven recipients of the Bill Wade Unsung Hero Award at the All-American Football Foundation’s Banquet of Champions XXVI, July 12 at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles.
Taylor will be honored for his contributions to the game, along with UCLA’s Bob Toledo, Duke Llewellyn and Woody Strode, USC’s Ward Bond and Bill O’Bradovich and Francis “Scoop” Evans from Maryland.
VOLLEYBALL
Five Orange Coast College players have decided where they will continue their playing careers, the school announced.
Outside hitter Susie Packard, from Westminster High, has signed with North Dakota and middle blocker Becky Baumgarten with Chicago State. Packard was second on OCC’s career lists with 460 kills and 394 digs.
Dave Moser, a 6-5 middle blocker from Dana Hills, will attend Arizona, and Brian Brown, a 6-4 middle blocker, will attend Cal Baptist. Joe Lattanzio, a 6-4 middle blocker, will transfer to Cal State Northridge.
