* Blues--Los Angeles blues legend Phillip Walker will make a rare appearance in the Valley on Friday at Cozy’s Bar & Grill in Sherman Oaks. The Texas-born singer-guitarist came to the West Coast in the late 1950s and became one of several blues men from the Lone Star State operating out of L.A. in the ‘60s, along with Johnny Guitar Watson and Lowell Fulson. Walker, 63, is well-known in blues circles around the world. His latest CD on Alligator Records, “Lonestar Shootout,” a joint venture with Lonnie Brooks and Long John Hunter, was nominated earlier this year for a W.C. * Musical Theater--Charlene Tilton, formerly of the long-running TV show “Dallas,” will head the cast in the Golden Performing Arts Center production of “42nd Street,” opening Saturday at the Madrid Theatre in Canoga Park. The Tony Award-winning musical features such numbers as “We’re in the Money,” “Lullaby of Broadway” and “42nd Street.” Show times: Saturday, 8 p.m.; Sunday, 2 p.m. The theater is at 21622 Sherman Way. * Latin Jazz--Poncho Sanchez and his band will perform Sunday at the Starlight Bowl in Burbank. While growing up in Los Angeles, Texas-born Sanchez was exposed to such Latin music greats as Tito Rodriguez, Tito Puente, Machito, Celia Cruz and Ray Barretto, as well as jazz legends Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Clifford Brown and Thelonious Monk. But he idolized vibist Cal Tjader and joined his band in 1975. Sanchez’s latest CD, “Latin Soul,” won the Grammy this year for best Latin jazz performance.
