Despite the extended Fourth of July holiday, drunk driving arrests and traffic accidents were down from last year, authorities said.

The California Highway Patrol reported 24 drunk driving arrests, down two from last year; traffic accidents were also down from 63 last year to 58.

Only one fatality was recorded during the department’s maximum enforcement period, from 6 p.m. Friday through midnight Tuesday. A Simi Valley boy was struck by an alleged drunk driver while riding his bike along the 2500 block of Morley Street.

“Things could have been so much worse,” CHP Officer David Webb said. “Everyone had a good time, and that was it.”

Extra officers on the street also helped, Webb said.

“Anticipation is half the battle,” Webb said. “People see more black and whites out there and they do think a little more.”
