Brick Shatters Windshield, Strikes 5-Year-Old in Head

A 5-year-old boy struck by a brick that may have been thrown from a freeway overpass was in critical condition Wednesday, officials said.

Bryan Donis of Laguna Niguel was with his parents, Rayna and Juan Donis, in a 1998 Toyota pickup on the San Diego Freeway when the concrete brick shattered the windshield and struck the child in the head, California Highway Patrol investigators said. It happened at 12:50 a.m. near the McFadden Avenue overpass in Huntington Beach.

The boy’s skull was fractured in two places, officials said, and Rayna Donis’ left arm was fractured.

Although investigators think the brick was thrown from the overpass, it could have been thrown over the sound wall, said Sgt. Perry Selph of the CHP’s Westminster office.
