The weather-beaten sign that trumpets upcoming concerts at the former Irvine Meadows Amphitheater will give way to a new, more vivid marquee if the Planning Commission agrees on the new design tonight.

Commissioners will consider a request to replace the outdated wooden board along the San Diego Freeway with a new, illuminated “coming attractions” sign for the rechristened Verizon Wireless Amphitheater.

The proposed 38-foot sign exceeds area height restrictions by 30 feet, planners said. But the sign shouldn’t arouse the ire of any residents because the nearest development facing the marquee is 4 miles away.

The proposed 800-square-foot sign is smaller than the existing billboard, which is 960 square feet.

Designs call for the sign to be surrounded by multicolored neon lights and supported by 18-foot aluminum beams, which will be painted blue to match the venue’s logo. No trees will be removed for the installation.

The Planning Commission will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the council chamber at Irvine Civic Center, 1 Civic Center Plaza.
