Deputy Kills Man as They Fight for Control of Gun

A sheriff’s deputy making a traffic stop ended up shooting a man to death Friday after they struggled for control of the deputy’s gun, investigators said.

The deputy, assigned to the Century Station, stopped a vehicle on Virginia Street at Bullis Road about 4 p.m., and the driver ran, said Deputy Darren Harris.

A brief foot chase ended in the backyard of a nearby residence and a struggle ensued, Harris said. At one point, he said, the suspect wrested the gun from the deputy, who got it back and--fearing for his life--shot the man.

The “deputy’s very lucky to be alive. He was definitely in a fight for his life. He was on the ground. They were rolling on the ground,” sheriff’s Lt. Ray Peavey said.

The suspect was hit by two bullets, Peavy said. The deputy, who is about 30, is being treated for an injured finger, authorities said.
