Bilingual Education

* Re “Bilingual Immersion Plan May Serve as Model,” July 4.

It was quite obvious that the voters of California were in favor of terminating all bilingual programs when we voted on Proposition 227.

According to your article, Cliff Rodrigues [board president for the Ventura Unified School District] stated that the parent response to this new plan has been overwhelming. I would love to see his list; I’m sure it would be a list of Spanish-speaking families and those die-hard bilingual program advocates who care not to listen to the voters of California.

As a former high school teacher, I wonder when the bilingual advocates will finally admit that bilingual education does nothing more than cater to the needs of those in our state who refuse to assimilate. How is it that we have students whose parents have immigrated from non-English-speaking countries who learn the English language without any special program?

Enough is enough. This is the United States of America. We speak English here, not Spanish.
