County to Transfer Park to City Control
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has voted to transfer control of Gates Canyon Park to the city of Calabasas.
The park, located less than a quarter-mile from Calabasas, has been owned by the county since 1988. But for the past seven years, the city has leased and maintained it, county officials said.
During the transfer talks, county officials expressed concern that residents living outside Calabasas might lose access to the park’s services and facilities.
But Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky said that issue has been resolved.
“The city has assured us that the park will remain open on an equal basis for Calabasas and unincorporated area residents alike,” he said.
Yaroslavsky also noted that the city has been responsible for various park improvements, such as resurfacing the tennis courts, fencing and lighting repairs, and the installation of drip irrigation systems. The city also has teamed up with the county Waste Management Division to develop yard waste and recycling programs.
“I’m very pleased we’ve been able to work this out,” said Yaroslavsky. “This arrangement really benefits everyone.”
